SARASOTA COUNTY, FL — K-9 Bryx, a longtime member of the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office, died Saturday after a nine-year battle with a tropical parasitic disease, the sheriff's office shared on Twitter. Bryx suffered from leishmaniasis, a parasitic disease spread by sand flies. It can cause skin sores and hair loss, and affects several other organ systems, including the spleen, liver, eyes and joints, according to PedMD. Born in Germany in 2012, Bryx served with Deputy Chris Indico since July 2013 and was also a part of Indico's family, the sheriff's office said. The K-9 dog was trained in narcotics detection, tracking, building and area searching, and criminal apprehension. Like what you're reading? "It is difficult enough to lose a pet but when your pet is your partner and protects you in one of the most dangerous professions out there, it is especially hard.
