MASSAPEQUA, NY — A Massapequa man who was trying to rob a person on the street at knifepoint was shot by one of his would-be victims, Nassau County police say.
According to police, a 56-year-old man was standing in front of a home on Unqua Road in Massapequa at 5:25 a.m. on March 6 when he was approached by Aidan Dooher, 21, of Suffolk Road. Police say Dooher demanded the man's cash and keys.
A 51-year-old man who was nearby saw what was happening and tried to help the other man. Police say Dooher turned toward him and pulled out a knife and began to threaten him. Dooher then began to approach the man while holding the knife, police said.
In fear for his safety, the 51-year-old man pulled out his handgun and shot Dooher once in the leg. Dooher ran, and police found him a shot time later and placed him under arrest.
Dooher was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Dooher was charged with two counts of first-degree attempted robbery, two counts of second-degree menacing and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He will be arraigned when medically practical.
