A 2 week intensive that teaches beginners the fundamentals of using a kiln to fuse & slump flat glass into solid glass art. About this experience This 2 week intensive that teaches beginners the fundamentals of using a kiln to fuse & slump flat glass. It includes two 4 hour sessions of instruction/shop time. This class will introduce students to the basics of fusing glass. You will cut, arrange, and fire kilns to fuse and slump glass, leaving with: - one slumped dish (either a plate, bowl or platter) - a coaster set of 4 - a small jewelry pendant. You will leave with a knowledge of different types of glass, color compatibility and reactivity, and how to make your own kiln schedules. This class will introduce the following skills: 1. Introduction to basic warm shop tools & equipment 2. Safe glass & kiln handling methods 3. Basic design and glass cutting skills 4. Introduction to the use of frits & stencils 5. Basic kiln functionality and programming 6. Intro to coldworking (flat grinder, hand lapping) Successful completion of this class will allow students to feel comfortable participating in open glass sessions or continue building their skills in intermediate classes & workshops. We will also spend time explaining the variety of type of kilns available and their appropriateness for various techniques for the home artist... for those that wish to build out their own studios. THE DETAILS Students will be required to comply with Covid safety requirements (use of provided personal masks, safety eyewear, and follow sanitary/safety guidelines). All tools, kilns and glass are supplied. Classes run Thursday nights 5p-9p. Minimum class size is 4 people. Your Instructor Magdalena Kelly - Lead Artist, Monterey GlassworksMagdalena is a multimedia artist with a specialty in the cross pollinating of glass blowing, casting, cold working, and natural textiles. She was trained by master caster Clifford Rainey and received her BFA from California College of the Arts where she studied Glass and Textiles. With a passion for harmony in the world and the environment, her work utilizes sustainable practices with recycled glass, plant dye, painting and photography.Magdalena is a lead artist and designer at Monterey Glassworks, leading our Warm and Cold shops.
