OXNARD, CA — An Oxnard man was arrested after police discovered several types of drugs and a 4-foot alligator at his waterfront home last week, police said.
Officials detained Donny Askar, 44, on March 2 and conducted a probation search of his residence on the 2500 block of Peninsula Road in Oxnard, according to a statement from the Oxford Police Department.
During the search of his home, police reportedly found heroin and methamphetamine for the purpose of sale. Cocaine was also found at the home, along with an alligator, the statement said.
"The 4-foot alligator was found submerged in a poorly secured tank with rancid water," police said.
Since Askar's home is by the water, officials said the alligator could have escaped into the Channel Islands Harbor. The alligator was reportedly taken to a safe location, according to the statement.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife was also involved in the investigation.
Askar was arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty and for the possession of heroin and methamphetamine for sale, all felonies. The illegal possession of an alligator is a misdemeanor, police said.
Anyone with information regarding this incident was urged to contact the Oxnard Police Department at 805-385-7600. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call the Ventura County Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477. A tip can also be left online here.
