Description
MENDOTA HEIGHTS, MN— Independent School District 197 is searching for participants to join the committee formed to rename Henry Sibley High School, named after the first governor of Minnesota, the district said Friday.
The decision to rename the high school was made in December, the district said.
The Pioneer Press reported that the decision was made to change the name after lobbyists pointed out Sibley's poor treatment of the Dakota people. Sibley participated in a mass hanging of 38 Dakota men in 1862, the Pioneer Press reported.
Committee members must attend the four virtual meetings, and members will be chosen by the district's superintendent after the application deadline on April 2, the district said.
Applicants who are selected will be notified by April 13, but opportunities for the community to give feedback on potential names will also be available, the district said.
