Press release from the City of Golden Valley: March 7, 2021 At its March 2 meeting, the Golden Valley City Council unanimously passed a proclamation declaring the City's support for The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). The decision comes just before world celebrates International Women's Day, March 8. CEDAW is the only international human rights treaty that focuses entirely on ending discrimination against women. In Dec 2020, the Golden Valley Human Rights Commission submitted a recommendation to the City Council to consider participating in CEDAW as part of its 2021 Goals Session, noting the tenets of CEDAW will help Golden Valley become more equitable. The HRC and staff then drafted a proclamation of support committing to the development and advancement of women and girls and eliminate discrimination and violence. Read the signed proclamation here. The City of Golden Valley will examine policies and practices to identify and rectify discrimination based on gender and enact policies and initiatives that promote the health and safety of women and girls. In addition, the City, with assistance from the HRC and other groups, will host events to educate the community on CEDAW and other issues related to gender equality. Learn more about CEDAW here.
