DePaul Women's Softball Goes 2-3 Over the Weekend

On Saturday, the Blue Demons started the weekend with a 3-0 loss to Louisville. DePaul's offense was missing in action, as the Blue Demons only tallied three hits and five base runners in the opening game of the Louisville Classic. Louisville scored one in the third, fourth and sixth inning to account for their three runs. Louisville didn't do a lot on offense, only getting eight hits, but they did enough to take the win. DePaul's Natalie Halvorson's record dropped to 1-3. Halvorson struck out one and walked two in six innings. Things did not improve for DePaul on Saturday, as they lost 5-1 to Miami (Ohio). Once again, DePaul only managed three hits. They also walked three times to give them six baserunners for the day. Miami started the scoring with a home run in the top of the second to make it 1-0. Two more Miami runs in the fifth and one in the sixth made it 5-0. DePaul finally broke their scoring drought in the seventh. Payton Viles walked, followed by Maranda Gutierrez hitting into a fielder's choice. Pearl Barroso singled to score Gutierrez and put DePaul on the board. Unfortunately for the Blue Demons, that's where it ended. After losing the first two games of the Cardinal Classic, the DePaul Blue Demons bounced back with a 6-5 win over Miami (Ohio). DePaul senior Kate Polucha was the star for DePaul, going four for four with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. DePaul got on the board in the first. Angela Scalzitti tripled, followed by Polucha's homer to put DePaul up 2-0. DePaul got walking in the third inning. A Polucha double wass followed by walks to Riley Pool, Gabby O'Riley, Pearl Barroso, and Grace Frazier to stretch the lead to 4-0. In the fourth, Maranda Gutierrez and Polucha singled. An error by Miami allowed Gutierrez ro score, making it 5-0. The RedHawks staged a bit of a comeback, plating two in the fourth and two more in the fifth. That would be the end of the scoring thjough, as DePaul held on for a one run victory. Natalie Halvorson picked up her second win of the season, going 4.1 innings. Halvorson gave up four runs on six hits, with three strike outs and one walk. Tori Meyer earned the save, allowing three hits in her 2.1 innings of relief. On Monday, DePaul faced Bradley in an afternoon double header. The Blue Demons came away with a split. In the first game, Krista Dalgarn earned the win, striking out a career high of 11 batters and holding the Braves hitless over the last four innings. Dalgarn improved her record to 4-1 on the young season. DePaul scored the game's first run in the first inning. Scalzitti walked and scored on a hit by Gutierrez. Bradley answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning to tie the game 1-1. After that, it was all DePaul. In the second, O'Riley led off with a walk. Erin Hocker pinch ran for O'Riley and Grace Frazier singled her to third. Barasso drove in Hocker with a single. Hilger singled to advance Barraso. After Scalzitti advanced the runners on a ground out, Gutierrez singled, driving in both runs and bringing the score to 4-1. The second game was a tough battle, but Bradley came out with a 2-1 win. After holding Bradley scoreless through five innings, a late rally by the Braves gave them the win. The Blue Demons scored in the top of the third, when Johnson singled to score Scalzitti. The score remained 1-0 until Bradley plated two in the sixth to put them ahead for good. DePaul's Meyer took the loss in her first start of the season. The Blue Demons stand at 7-7. The Blue Demons return to action at St. John's on Saturday.
