Description

Making Wicking Garden Containers is an ideal way to grow food on a subtropical sandbar. Learn how to make and use them. In this Backyard Homesteading class series, Maridel and Suzanne will guide you into recycling kitty litter buckets into Wicking Garden Containers. This concept can then be applied to any size container and also garden beds. The idea is to have a constant source of water for your vegetables to grow healthy and lush, which is challenging to do if you are trying to grow in the ground on a sandbar. This class will show you how. The course will include all materials, buckets, compost soil, handouts, Zone 9 Planting Chart, seeds and seedlings, and hands on instruction in making your own wicking buckets at home easily and affordably. The course will cover: benefits of using wicking containers, types of wicking containers, space required, soil mixes and hands on soil preparation using rich compost from our farms, fertilizing, container preparation, discussion on seeds and planting schedules, cutting the materials for your project, and answering Florida Gardening questions. Each person will take home a completed wicking container filled with composted soil and planted with seeds /seedlings, a folder of information, and a laminated Zone 9 Planting Chart. The class will be held at a beautiful goat farm in Malabar.
