The Douglas County Highway Department is seeking to fill one Maintenance Worker I position in our Hawthorne portal. A Maintenance Worker I serves as an operator of motorized equipment used in construction, repair and maintenance of County roadways. Class B CDL with ability to obtain a Class A CDL within one (1) year of hire is required. This position may be required to work night shifts for the winter season, which typically ranges from 5-6 months out of the year. Specific shifts may vary throughout the season. Must be available to work weekends during winter snow-plowing seasons, and occasionally work weekends during construction season. The work of the Maintenance Worker I involves the safe and efficient operation of those classes of equipment, which include, but are not limited to: trucks, dozers, rollers, graders, excavators and tri-axle snowplows. The work is performed under the general supervision of a working foreman. Essential duties of the Maintenance Worker I include minor repair and maintenance of equipment, patching, crack sealing, flagging, mowing, brushing and general laboring. Minimum qualifications for the Maintenance Worker I include a High School Diploma or equivalent. Must possess a Class B CDL license with appropriate endorsements; must be able to obtain a Class A CDL license within one (1) year of hire. Minimum of 1 year experience operating heavy equipment other than dump trucks or related experience is desirable. Employee must furnish some small hand tools. Supplemental Information KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED: Proper and safe operation of motorized equipment. Methods and materials used in the maintenance of roads. SKILLS REQUIRED: Effectively operate equipment.. Follow oral and written instruction. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and supervisors. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Safely lift up to 50 pounds. On occasion safely lift 50-100 pounds. Frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending and stooping. Reach and climb. Work in varied environmental conditions including temperatures extremes, varied air quality and exposure to construction materials and fumes. Be available for after hours and weekend work during rain, snow, ice or other events related to road conditions.The above is not to be construed as an exhaustive statement of physical requirements. WORKING CONDITIONS: Infrequent exposure to adverse environmental conditions, as well as some moderately loud noise from mechanical or electrical tools and equipment. HAZARDS: Limited exposure to injury and toxic roadway construction and maintenance materials. PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES/REQUIREMENTS: Class B CDL is required. Class A CDL is preferred.
