Description

MOKENA, IL — After offering community service hours to students to shovel snow around hydrants, 184 hydrants were cleared in Mokena, the Mokena Fire Protection District said. This was the first time the fire district had offered a snow removal community service program, and it plans to continue offering it in the winter months in the future. The program came about after Mokena had received several inches of snow after multiple snowstorms in February. "Within 10 days, students cleared the snow from 184 hydrants and also cleared the snow from several seniors' walkways/driveways," the fire district said in a release. Students were able to shovel a fire hydrant or a walkway/driveway for an older adult, and earn one hour of community service hour per hydrant or driveway upon sending photos of the work to the fire district.
