Change Timing Belt on VW Jetta

Have A 2005 VW Jetta that is running terribly. Misfiring on all cylinders. After speaking with a couple mechanics the General consensus is that it's probably the timing belt. We can't afford what a shop would charge for this repair so we were planning to sell it as is. However, if it's worth it for someone to fix it for $250, we would be relieved.
