LEXINGTON, MA — Students at Minuteman High School are cooking up something special. Students in the school's soup group are selling soup for a scholarship fund and culinary students are making meals for families in need. The school's weekly Soup Group is taking online orders for a St. Patrick's Day Special to benefit a student scholarship fund in addition to its regular weekly menu. Customers can order online and pick up their items contactless and in their vehicles outside the school. Minuteman's Soup Group started in mid-January as a temporary replacement for the student-run restaurant, The District. The group has sold about 700 quarts of soup, 550 entrées, and 500 bags of rolls. The Soup Group has sold out over the past three weeks with about 200 customers per week. The Soup Group also sells baked desserts and recently expanded to sell herbs grown by Horticulture students in Minuteman's greenhouse. Minuteman's Culinary Arts students have made hundreds of meals a month for people in need through partnerships with Food Link MA and the Lexington Interfaith Food Pantry – totaling about 3,000 meals since Oct. 1. "The Culinary Arts program has done a tremendous job shifting its business model to provide hands-on learning for students and a service platform for customers and those in need," said Minuteman Superintendent-Director Edward A. Bouquillon.
