NEW YORK CITY — Six new Bronx bike racks are the first of 10,000 more to come, officials promised. City Department of Transportation crews on Friday installed the bike racks along Bronx Park East to an audience of advocates and local officials. The bike racks are part of new DOT Commissioner Hank Gutman's program to expand bicycle parking across the city. "With spring on the horizon, we are thrilled to complete some of the first new bike rack installations -- as we work toward an ambitious goal of 10,000 by next year," Gutman said in a statement. "But DOT is not just committing to accommodating the city's cycling boom with more accessible bike parking, we are pairing these bike racks with major bike lane and safety improvements." City cyclists have long known that there aren't enough places to stow their bicycles. Gutman, when his appointment was announced in February, promised to rectify the problem by installing 10,000 bike racks by the end of 2022. Currently, the city has over 28,000 bike racks, officials said.
