NEW YORK CITY — New York City's public high school students, parents and teachers will learn next week when their in-person classrooms reopen, Mayor Bill de Blasio said. De Blasio teased the forthcoming announcement Friday on WNYC's "Brian Lehrer Show" after a listener's question. "How and when — we'll have an announcement next week on the details," he said. The city's in-person high school students remain in remote learning after spiking coronavirus levels forced district-wide closures in November. Elementary and middle school students have since returned but education officials have waited to bring the oldest students back. De Blasio said once high school students return the next question will be whether more students can go back to classrooms — a clear hint he's looking at another opt-in period for in-person learning. He said education officials will also have more details on a full school reopening in September. "Kids have gone through hell here and it's not healthy for kids to be out of school," he said.
