Select a used kids' bike, totally refurbish it, take it home, ride with your kiddo. No previous bike mechanic skill required. An in-person 4 hour class where participants will refurbish a single speed kids’ bike of their choosing and take it home at the end of class. The host will lead you through the steps of evaluating tires and inner tubes, tube patching; repacking hubs, headset, and bottom bracket; and evaluating and lubing the chain, and making chain tension adjustments. A demonstration stand with a web camera will be set up, and broadcast via a google meeting link or facebook live. The host will also circulate to your workbench to answer questions, give guidance and check your work. Participants need to bring a mask, a smartphone or tablet for viewing the demonstrations, and a sack lunch for our short break at the two hour mark. Cost: Registration fee $10 - though EventBrite (Free for City of Austin employees, please present ID at class) Materials charge: Based on the value of the bike selected, $20-$50, will be collected during class. No extra charge for any used parts needed for refurbishing. New parts put onto your bike are extra.
