Arvada Police Issue Warning About Coyote With Mange

ARVADA, CO — A coyote that's infected with mange has been spotted in central Arvada, police said. Arvada Animal Management has fielded calls daily over the past several weeks about the coyote, which was named Marcus to help officers keep track of its health and whereabouts, the Arvada Police Department said. "Coyotes generally are scared of humans and it is exceedingly rare to have a coyote bite or attack a human; however, Arvada Animal Management encourages residents to use hazing techniques such as shouting, clapping hands, exaggerated arm gestures and stomping feet if they see a coyote," the agency states on its website. Treating a coyote for mange is difficult as using bait with medicine is "risky and likely ineffective," animal management officials said. "Authorized trapping is difficult and even when trapped, coyotes are terrified and not likely to thrive indoors going through treatment for weeks in the presence of humans. " Keep dogs on leashes and keep cats indoors, officials said. If you live near open space, supervise your pets if they're in your backyard.
