Description

Press release from the Carlsbad Unified School District: March 3, 2021 We're hopeful that our district will be allowed to reopen our middle and high schools soon. We are waiting for approval from CDPH to do so. As we've shared previously, Carlsbad Unified School District was ready to open our middle and high school campuses on January 25, 2021. Due to rule changes by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), we've not yet been allowed to reopen our secondary schools for in-person instruction. The state recently outlined a process for school districts to request a review of their safety plans in order to reopen middle schools and high schools; we applied on the same day the application was released. On Friday, February 26, our application was approved by the public health officer for San Diego County, and was forwarded to the Safe Schools for All Team at the California Department of Public Health. The CDPH has seven business days to review our application, and must respond by Tuesday, March 9. If they approve our application on that date, we'll reopen our middle schools and high schools in a hybrid schedule on Thursday, March 11. (If we're given approval more quickly, we'd like to reopen more quickly.) Yesterday our superintendent co-authored a letter to CDPH with the superintendents of Poway Unified School District and San Dieguito Union High School District, as all three of our districts are in the same predicament. Our letter asks Dr. Naomi Bardach, head of the CDPH Safe Schools for All Team, to approve our districts' application as quickly as possible. Together, our three districts serve about 40,000 middle and high school students, most of whom will benefit academically and emotionally by returning to campus for regular instruction. We're ready to welcome our students back to campus; as soon as we're given the green light, we'll let you know.
