Description

For decades, doulas have revolutionized personalized, low-intervention birthing experiences for mothers, babies and families. During Covid, many states have recognized doulas as essential workers, allowing them into delivery rooms even when family is not allowed. Their assistance, guidance and support has helped countless women undergo the safe and healthy birthing experience they desire. This year's World Doula Week falls on March 22nd through March 28th. World Doula Week is a global movement that works to "empower doulas all over the world to improve the physiological, social, emotional, and psychological health of women, newborns and families in birth and in the postpartum period." Corie Adjmi, doula, women's empowerment advocate and award-winning author of Life and Other Shortcomings, has personally witnessed the incredible benefits that doulas are able to provide expecting mothers during this high-stress time. "Doulas encourage the birthing mother to advocate for themselves. They educate them so that they feel empowered throughout their own birth experience. With that information, a mother can make better choices and feel more confident throughout the process. We are really just there as emotional support, which many women do not have right now," Adjmi says. Here are Corie's top 2 ways that you can support, honor and celebrate our doula aids during World Doula Week: Idea #1: Show your local, community doulas just how much you care. There are plenty of ways to show your support for your local doulas and their work. For example, donate to, or volunteer at, your local doula and pregnancy care center, support a low-income mother in need by paying for their doula fees, purchase tickets to a virtual healthcare/doula seminar or other fun events, or send them little appreciation gifts like gift cards, sweet treats or flowers. Idea #2: Show your appreciation on social media! Sharing your support doulas on social media is a great way to inform others about doula work while helping doula aids feel appreciated. Share a local doula agency's business page on your pages or post about the many benefits of doulas. If you have used a doula before, share your testimonial and call out the awesome doula care you received during your birth or pregnancy process or refer a pregnant friend.
