Description
Hello! We have a studio space opening up soon at Washington Street. Please share this with your members/ networks. Washington Street is a cooperative artist studio building and gallery/event space in Union Square, Somerville. We are seeking visual artists for studio space memberships and we are specifically looking for artists who are interested in being part of our community. The available studio space is 132 sq ft and is $332/month. It is on the second floor of our building, and has two windows facing west. Please note, studios may not be used as music practice spaces and our lease does not allow kilns. Rent is inclusive of wifi and all utilities. There is an MBTA bus stop (the 86) across the street and we are located about 10 minutes walking from Union Square Somerville and from the intersection of Washington Street and Beacon Street where various other buses pass (83, 85, 87, 91, CT2). There is also free parking for members in a lot behind the building. There are 2-4 steps leading into the building and the second floor is accessible only by stairs. We function as a collective, working in committees to manage the space, plan events, and find new members. We seek to include members of different backgrounds and our community is enriched by the participation of artists who bring their different identities (race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation and gender identity, age, ability, artistic discipline, life experience, etc.) to the space. We are committed to building a more welcoming environment for artists whose identities may leave them systematically excluded from arts institutions. Things are a bit different at the moment due to the pandemic, but in regular times we host events, gallery shows, concerts, workshops and any creative projects our members dream up. We are active participants in Somerville Open Studios. We plan to resume these activities as soon as it is safe to do so. Currently members are using their studios and the darkroom, and following cleaning and safety protocols we have developed for the COVID-19 situation. At the moment we are conducting interviews with potential members via video call. Please fill out the form at our web page as soon as possible. Please answer all questions and include a link to images of your work. We will get in touch in the next few weeks if we are interested in setting up a virtual interview with you!
