I'm a retired Michigan State employee, and it is my experience that people receive pay outs for a wide variety of reasons. The nefarious reason you suggest, that Robert Gordon got payed off for silence is absurd. Actually it's the only logical reason, and it was mentioned both in the NDA and a statement Gordon released 2 days ago (and paraphrased)- politicians should be free to take actions without revealing the discussions leading to those actions. When a governor claims her actions are based on facts and science I want to know the discussions she used to declare it's safe to buy paint and carpet at Home Depot, but not Lowes. Covid hit the west coast earlier than Michigan. When covid patients were housed in long term care facilities in those states it decimated that elderly population. I want to know the gist of the discussions between two lawyers (Whitmer and Gordon) which lead to the conclusion we should do the same in Michigan and expect different results. The results were the same here, 2000+ seniors gave their lives because of her executive order. Michigan deserves to know the facts and science which she used to make that decision. For months Whitmer (again, a LAWYER) declared she could lock down the state without input from the legislature by combining bits and pieces of two laws favorable to her, while ignoring the 30 day emergency declaration limit. She was wrong. I think it's only fair to know what logic she used to change millions of people's lives so dramatically, and ultimately illegally. 1- It is way too small. Why? It was the balance of the one year contract Gordon negotiated last October. He left on his own, he was a lawyer in charge of a state health department. What do you think Gordon knew that was so critical to the STATE OF MICHIGAN that his silence is worth even that much? 2- A payout would be kept confidential; even (Whitmer's) closest staff would not know the details. You certainly NEVER would have heard of it. FOIA, it brings the dark dealings of politicians into the light. 3- If he disclosed even a hint, he would lose the cash. True. But as Whitmer used taxpayer's money and more and more of her actions are coming into question I'm not sure a court is going to enforce a contract that has no seeming purpose other than to cover her dealings and mistakes. 4- The public would be informed it was HIS decision to resign, and they missed him greatly. Gordon announced his resignation on social media, Whitmer said he felt it was time to move on.
