The Workshop Assistant (WA) at Kay Chesterfield is a team player who maintains a positive attitude, a high level of professionalism, and an appreciation for quality work. The WA takes direction from the Workshop Supervisor and Lead Sewer, and reports to the Operations Manager. Character - Strong work ethic and self-motivated - Great attitude and friendly - Trustworthy and responsible - Highly organized - Keen attention to detail - Ability to work independently and collaboratively - Flexible, demonstrating grace under pressure - Sense of urgency - Reliable attendance and punctuality Required Basic Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - The WA is an entry-level position and can be trained; experience in the upholstery field is highly desirable - Warehouse or workshop experience preferred - Treating customer-owned items and materials with utmost care is absolutely essential - Spanish/English fluency is a must Summary of Key Responsibilities - Document condition of all incoming furniture for damage to finish and structure, and noting any missing or damaged hardware - Strip furniture in preparation for reupholstery - Independently follow through on all assignments to completion and ensure efficiency according to stripping standards - Insert foam or inserts into cushions or pillows as needed - Communicate any potential delays in work to the appropriate supervisor or manager - Maintain hardware inventory and stock levels, and keeping it organized to prevent misplacing parts - Collaborate with Senior WA or Working Foreman to identify the complexity of each furniture piece and review any additional “special instructions” identified on KC work orders - Maintain an orderly warehouse environment and track all inbound/outbound furniture, products and materials. - Reuse materials when possible; make decisions as to what can be reused, recycled or put in a landfill - Learn (and retain) new skills and techniques as part of growing with the company - Maintain a clean and organized warehouse - Perform exterior maintenance which may include light landscaping, waste management and general cleanliness - Receive fabric rolls and tagging them as directed by the Office Manager - Other duties as required Attributes - The WA must stay highly organized - The WA must pay attention to deadlines - The WA must pay attention to signs on furniture - The WA must multi-task - The WA will keep track of the time for each job - The WA workstation will follow “5S” principles - The WA will follow all safety procedures - The WA will maintain a clean, organized work environment (including a waste-free environment if possible) - The WA will be occasionally available to work overtime or weekend days as required Position Requirements - Ability to work in a warehouse environment with varying temperatures - Ability to walk, stand, stoop, kneel, crouch and reach while performing duties - Ability to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; lift and/or move lightweight objects - Ability to maintain ongoing, effective, respectful and progressive lines of communication with others - Ability to lift and carry fabric rolls, cartons, and/or packages weighing up to 50 pounds - Ability to go up and down stairs and ladders - Ability to stand on a concrete floor (w/gel mat) for extended periods of time - Ability to match or detect differences between colors, including shades of color and brightness
