WATERTOWN, MA — The Watertown Free Public Library is partnering with New Repertory Theatre and the Pigsgusset Initiative to host a conversation about local Indigenous history and the role of Indigenous culture keepers in challenging narratives that attempt to erase them. The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on March 18. In May 2021, New Repertory Theatre will premiere their second Moving Play, centering on local Indigenous history. The virtual, interactive event gives viewers the chance to chat with the Moving Play Playwright, Mwalim Morgan J. Peters of the (Mashpee Wampanoag), and Director, Jaime Carrillo (Aymara). Mishy Lesser, of the Upstander Project and the Pigsgusset Initiative, will moderate the discussion, which includes participation from the audience. The Pigsgusset Initiative is a working group of Watertown Citizens for Peace, Justice, and the Environment. "We are fortunate to have this unique opportunity to speak with Mwalim and Jaime prior to the opening of the New Rep's play," said Lesser. "Watertown community members will have the chance to learn more about local Indigenous history, how it has been erased, and what we as neighbors need to unlearn to better understand the people who have called this place home for thousands of years."
