CAMBRIDGE, MA — One worker was killed and another seriously injured Wednesday morning after a stairwell collapsed at a parking garage in East Cambridge, according to police and fire officials. The workers were restoring the stairwell at the First Street Garage when it collapsed, authorities said. "At least a ton" of concrete fell on the men, who were the only people inside the stairwell at the time, Acting Fire Chief Gerard Mahoney said. The man who died was 56. His identity has not been released. A 41-year-old worker who was dug out of the rubble is critically injured. The First Street Garage is owned by the City of Cambridge. It's at the corner of Second Street and Spring Street near Joseph Morris Square. Authorities and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating. The incident occurred one week after two workers were killed at a Boston construction site. The men were struck by a truck and knocked into a hole in the street in the city's Financial District.
