NEWPORT, RI — Rhode Island voters went to the polls Tuesday to cast their ballots concerning seven statewide budget questions. All seven questions were approved. Here in Newport, voters followed the statewide trend by approving all seven questions. A breakdown of votes by question and type is listed below. Question One $107.3 million for higher education, including $57.3 million for a fine arts center at URI, $38 million for the Clarke Science Building at RIC and $12 million to renovate CCRI's campuses. Approve 1,728 votes67.4 percent Reject 834 votes32.6 percent Question Two $74 million for environment and recreational projects, a total of $10 million over the governor's original proposal. Approve 2,168 votes84.5 percentReject 399 votes15.5 percent Question Three $65 million for affordable housing, an increase of $40 million over the original proposal, included in the amendment offered by the governor in July. Approve 1,863 votes73.3 percent Reject 677 votes26.7 percent Question Four $71.7 million for transportation initiatives. Approve 2,225 votes86.9 percent Reject 335 votes13.1 percent Question Five $15 million for early childhood care and the educational capital fund. Approve 1,960 votes76.6 percent Reject 598 votes23.4 percent Question Six $7 million for arts and cultural infrastructure, including $6 million for the cultural arts and economy grant program, and $1 million for the state preservation grants program. Approve 1,800 votes70.4 percent Reject 757 votes29.6 percent Question Seven $60 million for commerce infrastructure, including $20 million for the Port of Davisville at Quonset and $40 million for industrial site development. Approve 1,671 votes65.4 percent Reject 885 votes34.6 percent
