Description
BERKELEY, CA — The city of Berkeley is seeking community members to help police the police.
The city is seeking applicants to join a newly established nine-member Police Accountability Board approved by Berkeley voters in November with the passage of Measure II.
The Police Accountability Board will replace the City's existing Police Review Commission.
The board will bring civilian oversight to the Berkeley Police Department, providing community participation in setting and reviewing Police Department policies, practices, and procedures.
The board will also provide a means for prompt, impartial, and fair investigations of complaints brought by the community against the city's sworn officers.
City officials believe independent civilian oversight can promote public trust.
Officials said in a news release last month a diverse pool of applicants that reflect the city's diversity.
Most residents 18 and over are eligible to serve.
"Board members must be fair minded and objective, with a demonstrated commitment to community service," city officials said in a statement.
"Desirable qualities include: familiarity with human resources, law, police procedures, police oversight, or involvement in civil rights or community organizations."
