From the University of Alabama at Birmingham: March 3, 2021 By Fletcher Allen The University of Alabama at Birmingham will host author Saeed Jones for a lecture through the Jemison Visiting Professorship in the Humanities Endowment. The free, virtual event will take place at 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 10. It is presented by the College of Arts and Sciences' Department of English. To attend the event, register online. Jones is a former contributor for Buzzfeed and is known as a powerful voice in the literary activist community. His debut poetry collection, "Prelude to Bruise," was awarded the 2015 PEN/Joyce Osterweil Award for Poetry and was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. Jones' work often focuses on the intersection of race, sex and power. In 2019, he released his memoir, "How We Fight for Our Lives." In a review, NPR said, "Jones's voice and sensibility are so distinct that he turns one of the oldest of literary genres inside out and upside down." "How We Fight for Our Lives" won the Kirkus Prize for nonfiction. The UAB Jemison Visiting Professorship in the Humanities Endowment is a lecture series that invites professors, scholars and writers to speak to faculty, staff, students, alumni and the general public.
