GENERAL SUMMARY: The Maintenance Technician is primarily responsible for general maintenance and repair duties related to the company’s property and facilities. Duties include: routine maintenance of office equipment, painting of facilities, routine plumbing, light construction, routine electrical, preventive maintenance, and similar activities. This position maintains the facilities and grounds to provide a safe, clean and inviting environment for staff, volunteers, visitors and the animals housed at the shelter. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: - Light electrical duties such as replacing breakers, installing new circuits, maintaining and hanging lighting fixtures, replacing light bulbs. - Light to medium plumbing duties such as installing new plumbing lines, upgrading old lines, replacing valves and fixing leaks. - Light trouble shooting HVAC problems, sets building temperatures, cleans and maintains vents. - Minor landscaping, such as tree trimming and minor weed abatement. - Medium building maintenance including painting, repairing locks, doors, drains, gutters and sheetrock repair. Some light cement and brick work. Installing donor plaques. Window and vent cleaning. - Maintains equipment such as forklift, small electrical cart and alarm systems. - Minor vehicle maintenance includes periodical test drives, checks fluids, air pressure, and windshield wipers. - Trains and certifies forklift operators. - Responds to alarm systems and emergencies as it relates to the security and safety of the premises. - Light pest control, such as setting and retrieving mouse/rat traps and wasp abatement. - Survey buildings and coordinate repairs to ensure they are consistent with health and safety regulations. ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: - Provides accurate information and friendly professional service to the public and coworkers in a responsive, positive, courteous and truthful manner. - Must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the employer’s safety policies and rules and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel. - Must participate as a member of the shelter’s Safety Committee. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: - Light fabrication skills; e.g. riveting, MIG welding, cutting and bending mild and stainless steel. - Use of Pro Press pipe fitting tool, able to sweat copper pipe and make equipment. repairs using a soldering gun. - Use of multi meter to troubleshoot; make repairs/installations to electrical fixtures, etc. - Safe use of many hand tools; e.g. circular saw, reciprocating saw, drill gun, hammer drill and impact driver. - Safe use of table saw. - HVAC; able to diagnose and perform quality control of 3rd party vendor workmanship. - Basic carpentry, masonry, plumbing and electrical skills. - Good communication and interpersonal skills. - Good client/customer service skills. - Ability to follow oral and written instructions. - Ability to prioritize multiple tasks. - Ability to effectively operate a personal computer, copy machine and telephone system; includes knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Google Docs. - Have a valid California Drivers license and clear driving record for one year prior to employment in order to operate SSPCA automatic and standard transmission vehicles. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: - High school graduate or GED equivalent. - Trade school or equivalent in electrical, carpentry, HVAC and plumbing a plus. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: - Allergic condition which would be aggravated from exposure or through contact with animals or chemicals used to sanitize facilities, vehicles, or equipment is a disqualification. - Must stand, walk, bend and stoop frequently to perform duties. Have the ability to perform prolonged strenuous physical activity, including lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds alone or up to 100 pounds with the help of fellow employees for short distances. WORKING CONDITIONS: - May be exposed to hostile or abusive members of the public. Must be able to deal with an often times emotion-charged public and carry a fast paced and changing work load which at times can be stressful. - By nature of the job, there is occasional exposure with dead, injured, sick, unruly, vicious, and/or dangerous animals in addition to exposure to parasites and infectious diseases. - Must be available and willing to work such weekends, holidays, overtime, and attend mandatory training and meetings as the employer determines are necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.
