Position Summary Under the general supervision of the Lands Manager, the Lands Technician performs a variety of tasks in order to mitigate the potential impacts of wildland fires and to prevent environmental damage while protecting endangered and cultural species and their habitat on tribal land holdings. This includes maintaining and properly clearing the lands, following environmental requirements and fire safe measures. The Lands Technician must exercise good judgment and be able to safely operate a full range of tools and mechanical equipment related to the performance of the job. Job Functions Essential Functions • Creates shaded fuel breaks to slow a potential fire and provide an area where fire crews, engines and air resources can suppress a fire; • Maintains and clears brush, trees and other growth; • Conducts habitat maintenance; • Conducts vegetation management; • Works within the cultural requirements of the UAIC; • Operates various hand tools, power tools, and heavy machinery, including but not limited to: o Fire line creation tools o Hand saw & pole saw o Axe o Hedge Trimmer o Chain Saw o Bush Cutter o Blower o Stump grinder o Masticator o Mini-excavator (with grappling attachments) o Track bush chipper Non-essential Functions • Assists the Lead Lands Technician with scheduled assessments of wildfire mitigation; • Other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge • Knowledge of vegetation management; • Familiarity with, or willingness to learn policies, techniques and practices of wildland fire prevention; • Operating knowledge of small engine equipment such as mowers, pruners, chainsaws, weed-eaters, blowers, etc.; • Operating knowledge of hand tools, such as fire line creation tools, handsaws, axe and bush cutters; • Operating knowledge of, or willingness to learn to operate, heavy machinery, such as stump grinder, masticators, and track bush chipper; • Knowledge of basic mechanical repair techniques; • Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices; • Basic computer knowledge for data entry and Microsoft Outlook. Skills • Acute attentiveness to safety procedures; • Excellent communication skills both on the phone and in person; • Attention to detail and ability to follow written and verbal directions; • Skilled in backing-up and towing trailers. Abilities • Ability to operate a kestrel (fire weather meter); • Ability to troubleshoot, repair, and conduct maintenance on a wide variety of equipment; • Ability to operate a variety of hand tools, power tools and heavy equipment in a safe and effective manner; • Ability to read and interpret maps; • Ability to communicate verbally in a tactful and effective manner; • Ability to exercise good judgment; • Ability to maintain professional conduct; • Ability to successfully prioritize and handle multiple tasks; • Ability to be flexible and respond to after-hours calls; • Ability to work in inclement weather, through rugged terrain, while carrying equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds; • Ability to safely drive in rough terrain working conditions; • Ability to maintain valid Class C driver’s license; • Ability to pass a Class A driver’s license test, if needed; • Ability to clear all necessary background checks. Qualifications Minimum requirements • High school diploma or equivalent • Valid Class C driver's license • 3 years of work experience in a related field Preferred qualifications: • Related certifications and credentials • Valid Class A driver’s license • Experience operating a commercial masticator and track brush chipper • Professional knowledge of natural resource management, wildland ecology, fire mitigation and management theories, concepts, principles, and standards in environmental practices. Working Conditions The working conditions for this position consist of primarily traversing rough terrain on tribal land holdings. The work requires physical activity in driving and walking to, from, and around locations. The employee is required to be able to work in rough terrain and in adverse conditions while carrying equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds. The employee must be able to work in temperature extremes, such as heat in excess of 100 degrees F, and cold below 40 degrees F, as well as with exposure to high noise levels and vibrations, and hazards such as electrical shock, falls, burns and toxic chemicals. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and sit. The employee must use hands and fingers, to handle, pinch, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs and ladders; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job, with or without correction, include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
