MEDFORD, MA — Medford administrators do not yet know what full in-person learning by the end of the school year will look like, but the district is taking steps to prepare for more in-person learning, Superintendent Marice Edouard-Vincent said Friday. This comes as Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Commissioner Jeffrey Riley announced his intent to require districts to increase in-person learning this spring. Riley said his initial goal is to bring all elementary school students back by April 5. He will ask the DESE board to give him authority to determine when hybrid and remote models no longer count for learning hours. In preparation for a return to in-person learning, the Medford Public Schools is asking students in grades 6-12 who have been transferring among Cohorts B, C and D to make a definitive commitment to cohort by Friday, March 12. Except for remote learning due to COVID-related circumstances, such as symptoms or close contacts, students will be required to attend school in person on their cohort's designated school days. In-person attendance will be taken for all 6-12 students in Cohorts B and C starting Monday, March 15, and participation in any extracurricular activities will be contingent upon adherence to the in-person attendance and scheduling expectations of each cohort. Students, parents and caregivers with questions regarding attendance should contact their school principal or guidance counselor with questions. Families who prefer to keep their children fully remote will still have that option, Edouard-Vincent said. There are also several listening sessions scheduled as planning begins for the 2021-22 school year: Elementary School March 4 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM Students Only March 4 5 PM to 6 PM Faculty & Staff Only March 4 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM Parents & Caregivers Only Middle School March 9 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM Students Only March 9 5 PM to 6 PM Faculty & Staff Only March 9 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM Parents & Caregivers Only High School March 11 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM Students Only March 11 5 PM to 6 PM Faculty & Staff Only March 11 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM Parents & Caregivers Only If you are unable to attend these Listening Sessions, email your feedback to [email protected].
