Description

Congratulations to the Lyons Township High School varsity poms for placing third at the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Competitive Dance sectionals this past weekend and qualifying for state competition. Hats off to junior varsity poms as well for qualifying pom, jazz and lyrical routines for the Illinois Drill Team Association (IDTA) State competition. Coach Brittany Knickelbein Smith says it's been a very unconventional season. "We started our season about six months later than normal, conducted virtual tryouts, meetings and practices, were put on pause and had just a few weeks to prepare for competitions. All these obstacles made the dancers fight harder." With all competitions conducted virtually, the squads didn't know what to expect. The captains and coaches worked together on choreography and they had two practices – as opposed to the usual two weeks - between receiving feedback from one competition and needing to submit the next one. Smith said, "I told the team to just give it their best; we can't compare ourselves to other teams this year. Qualifying for IHSA and IDTA State was above any expectations we had for this season. Both JV and Varsity teams have thrived through all the turbulence."
