JOLIET, IL — Around 4 p.m. Tuesday, members of the Joliet Fire Department recovered a drowning victim from the murky Des Plaines River near the Brandon Road Lock and Dam. Sources told Patch the body is believed to be the man who jumped into the canal near Joliet's Bicentennial Park shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 17.
On back to back nights in January, people jumped into the frigid Des Plaines River, prompting a large search and rescue response from the Joliet Fire Department. On Jan. 18, Joliet's dive teams recovered the body of a 39-year-old Joliet man a few hours after he jumped into the cold waters near the Jackson Street Bridge.
However, the body of the first person who jumped near Bicentennial Park from the previous night had yet to be found.
Joliet Fire Chief Greg Blaskey told Patch that the body floating in the water late Tuesday afternoon was spotted by one of the barge workers, and the workers called 911.
The Joliet Fire Department was summoned to the scene and since the body was found near Rockdale, the Illinois State Police is spearheading the investigation and stare police are responsible for releasing the identity of the person recovered from the water, according to Blaskey.
