1292 Malibuites Lose Power In 5-Acre Fire

MALIBU, CA — The five-acre Knolls Fire that broke out early Saturday morning and burned about five acres of brush near Malibu Canyon and Malibu Knolls roads caused 1,292 people to lose power, Southern California Edison has confirmed. The fire destroyed power equipment that crews needed to restore, according to SCE spokesperson Taelor Bakewell. Power went out in the area around Pacific Coast Highway and Las Flores Canyon Road at 5:38 a.m. Sunday, and was fully restored by 1:50 a.m. Monday, Bakewell said. The fire also resulted in the brief closure of Malibu Canyon Road at Piuma Road, Pacific Coast Highway between Corral Canyon and Carbon Canyon Roads, and Malibu Canyon Road from Pacific Coast Highway to Piuma Road, according the Malibu-Lost Hills Sheriff's Station. These closures were lifted Sunday morning after firefighters stopped the blaze's forward progress. All lanes of Las Virgenes and Malibu Canyon roads, from Mulholland Highway, were re-opened at 1:20 p.m., according to the city of Malibu. — Michael Wittner and City News Service contributed to this report.
