Press release from Berkeley Public Schools:
March 1, 2021
Dear Berkeley Unified Community,
Yesterday, I became aware that an anonymous individual in our community posted a video of the president of our teachers union taking his two-year- old daughter to her nursery school. Regrettably, this video, which invades the privacy of a family in our school community and targets one of our educators, has already appeared in the press.
In less than a month, we will have the opportunity to be together again on our school campuses Many of us will be adapting to the requirements of on-campus learning during a pandemic. We have been apart so long, and it's been such a very painful time for everyone. Those who are ready to return will be thrilled to see each other, even with all the limits we must live with.
We will need each other in order to stay safe. We will have to nudge each other about face masks and daily symptom screening. We'll have to be generous but insistent that everyone follow the rules. And meanwhile, those students and families who are choosing to wait a bit longer to return are also still valued members of our community.
Looking to what's ahead of us, in these last weeks before we reopen, nothing is served by treating members of our community, including our teachers – and the teacher who represents them as their union president – as the enemy. We compromise our collective well-being if we don't respect one another and treat each other with compassion
We have a path forward. It's one we have to walk together.
Brent Stephens Superintendent
