SOMERVILLE, MA — Somerville Mayor Joe Curtatone will not seek re-election this year, he announced during the city's midterm address Monday afternoon. The mayor, who was elected in 2003, told The Boston Globe he has no plans for what he will do next. "I'm not even thinking about what I may or may want to do. Politics and running for [another] office is science fiction to me," Curtatone told the Globe. "Soon enough, I'll have enough clarity in my mind to figure out what I want to be when I grow up." Curtatone told his constituents that he'll continue to work for them until his last day on the job. "It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve the city where I was raised," Curatone said during the midterm address. "I love this job and this community with every ounce of my being." Curtatone said the city needs to rebound from economic struggles during the pandemic and said he wants to focus on getting the city through that. Curtatone is known for his progressive politics, such as declaring racism a public health crisis in June 2020. This story is being updated. Please check back for the latest.
