BROOKLYN, NY — A Brooklyn man has been charged with murder following the death of a Good Samaritan who tried to stop a robbery outside an illegal gambling den, according to police and reports.
William Smith, 45, was arrested Sunday evening, two days after a chaotic brawl in Sunset Park left four men stabbed on the street, police said. One of the men, Yong Zheng, died of his injuries.
Zheng had been returning home from dinner with friends on Friday when he spotted two groups of men fighting near Seventh Avenue and 57th Street, family later told reporters. He rushed over to try and stop the brawl, which police said had spilled onto the sidewalk after a robbery at an illegal gambling den nearby.
Zheng — a former bus driver and father of two — was stabbed four times and later pronounced dead. A 39-year-old, 42-year-old and 49-year-old were also stabbed and are all expected to survive, according to police.
Smith was charged with murder, robbery and three counts of assault, police said.
They said Monday morning that the investigation is ongoing.
