By Chris Jennewein, Times of San Diego March 1, 2021 The giant Comic-Con pop-culture convention will be virtual for the second year in a row, organizers announced Monday, saying July 2021 is too early for a safe in-person gathering. However, Comic-Con International said it has begun planning a shorter in-person event for November. "While we are buoyed by the rollout of the vaccine and the growing number of individuals being inoculated, it appears that July will still be too early to safely hold an in-person event of the magnitude of Comic-Con," the San Diego-based organization said in a statement on its website. Earlier this year Comic-Con canceled its spring show, WonderCon in Anaheim, which will be offered as a free online event March 26-27. Comic-Con said the cancelations of two major Comic-Con conventions "have left us with limited financial resources" so this year's virtual event will be reduced to three days spanning July 23-25. "Never could we have imagined what the world experienced in 2020 and continues to experience today," the organization said. Comic-Con said it is working on a three-day in-person event that would be held in San Diego in November, but released few details. Pop-culture fans who purchased badges that were rolled over to the 2021 show will have those badges automatically transferred to the anticipated 2022 event unless a refund is requested.
