ELMHURST, IL — Elmhurst saw a slightly lower rate of increase in new coronavirus cases last week, according to the DuPage County Health Department. As of Sunday, the city experienced 39 new cases in the last week, or a 1.1 percent increase, for a total of 3,694. That is down from the previous week's increase of 1.2 percent. The number of those who have recovered is unavailable. As of Sunday, coronavirus-related deaths in Elmhurst increased by one over the last week, to 60. The mortality rate among those locally with the coronavirus is 1.6 percent. As of Monday, Elmhurst Hospital was caring for nine patients with confirmed cases of COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, according to the hospital. That is down by six from the previous week. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 173 people have died from the coronavirus at the facility. The number is up by one from a week ago. Since March, 1,544 patients have been discharged from Elmhurst Hospital following treatment for confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the hospital. Elmhurst Hospital's patient base covers an area far greater than Elmhurst itself.
