Teen Rescued After Jumping Off Bridge Into River In Aurora

AURORA, IL — A 15-year-old girl was rescued by divers and paramedics Friday night after she jumped off an Aurora bridge into the Fox River, city officials said. The teen jumped after talking to police negotiators for more than 90 minutes, according to a news release. Divers from the Aurora Fire Department's Water Rescue Team pulled the girl from the water less than two minutes after she jumped, officials said. Kane County Surpasses 50K Coronavirus Cases The teen was taken to a local hospital in good condition and did not suffer any injuries while jumping from the bridge, which is about 15-20 feet high, according to AFD Battalion Chief Jim Rhodes. About two dozen divers, paramedics and firefighters on scene Friday were "very prepared" to act "from the moment she jumped," which led to a "very quick" rescue, Rhodes said. The Water Rescue Team is usually called to four or five incidents each year, but there were no rescues in 2020, Rhodes said. Paris Lewbel, a spokesperson for the Aurora Police Department, said officers "worked quickly" with the fire department to "create a plan and strategically place divers around the bridge." "Unfortunately the person decided to jump, but because we have worked the fire department, we were able to successfully retrieve her from the water and get her the services that she needed," Lewbel told Patch.
