RIVERHEAD, NY — A police officer saved a baby choking on a Lego piece at a Riverhead day care Monday, authorities said.
The Riverhead Town Police Department said they received a call at 8:49 a.m. that the infant was choking at the Pine Tree Day Nursery on Roanoke Avenue.
Police Sgt. Jill Kubetz arrived within one minute of the call and realized the baby's airway was fully blocked, police said. She performed back thrusts, which dislodged the 2-inch Lego piece from the child's lower airway, police said. The Lego moved enough to allow for limited airflow, police said.
Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance paramedic responded to the day care and removed the Lego piece from the child's throat, police said.
The baby was transported to Stony Brook Hospital for an evaluation and released, police said.
The father and infant visited the police department "to express their gratitude to the officers and ambulance responders for their actions this morning," police said.
The Pine Tree Day Nursery could not immediately be reached for comment.
