Birmingham PD Cracks Down On Street Racing

BIRMINGHAM, AL — In an effort to crack down on the illegal activity of street racing in Birmingham, an investigation by Birmingham police over the weekend resulted in multiple arrests and citations. The Birmingham Police Department conducted a coordinated operation that consisted of tactical officers, detectives, patrol officers, task force officers and Star One air support. Intelligence gathered led the joint operation to George Ward Park and Sloss furnace on 32nd Street North, according to Sgt. Rod Mauldin of the Birmingham Police Department. These locations served as meet up points for large groups of street racers and spectators, Mauldin said. During the operation, The Birmingham Police Department recovered a firearm and a Corvette stolen out of Georgia. The suspect was arrested for receiving stolen property, violation of the State Firearms Act, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana. Total, 28 citations were also issued during the operation. "Illegal street racing has been an ongoing issue locally and nationally," Mauldin said. "Illegal street racing has proved to be deadly for participants and puts community members in grave danger. This has caused a growing concern due to street racing occurring in multiple locations throughout the City of Birmingham." Mauldin added that the Birmingham Police Department will continue efforts to proactively combat illegal street racing. "The Birmingham Police Department appreciates and encourages community members to report all instances of street racing and all criminal activity," Mauldin said.
