Grass Cattle Company is hiring an Assistant Ranch Manager for 2021! The 150-acre ranch in Charlotte, Vermont raises grass fed beef using animal welfare and regenerative agricultural practices. The ranch is managed for soil conservation and carbon sequestration. We cultivate the connection between cattle, grassland, and soil to produce the finest quality grass fed beef on the plate, in the pasture, and for the planet. Come get your hands dirty and help feed the community with delicious beef! This is a unique position and learning experience that can be customized for the right applicant. There are opportunities for growth in ranch management, sales, marketing, and construction. Education and Experience: Education in agriculture and animal science (or a related field) and experience in animal handling, pasture-based fence and water systems, fence construction and maintenance, equipment handling and maintenance, and general carpentry is desirable. Applicants with additional skills such as construction, advanced carpentry, e-commerce, website development, welding, or training and caring for horses will get special consideration. Core Responsibilities: Daily cattle rotations and herd welfare checks Temporary and permanent fence maintenance, setup, and repair Waterline maintenance and upkeep Hay feeding Brush and hedgerow cleaning and clearing Assist in working cattle in livestock[-]handling systems Other ranch chores may include but are not limited to: corral setup, tractor work, carpentry and general building upkeep, ranch clean[-]up projects, local product delivery, lawn mowing Being generally available during the rare emergency. While these happen maybe 1 or 2 times per year, special consideration will be given to those who live close to the ranch, meaning they can show up in an emergency. Off-hours emergency calls are compensated with double hourly wages. Special consideration will be given to those with the ability to live on the ranch during the grazing season. Trailer hookups available. Rustic accommodations may be available. Hours: There is some flexibility here depending on the applicant and whether they live in the vicinity of the ranch. The initial expectation is 25 hours per week - 5 hours per day, 5 days a week, including a few weekends here and there. This position could grow into a full-time position rapidly for a candidate with additional skills like construction and carpentry, marketing, sales, or ecommerce and website development. Compensation: $14-$20/hour, depending on experience. Ideally this is the start of a long-term role for someone inspired to get in on the ground floor of a growing business.
