Framingham To Mark First Eurie Stamps Day On His Birthday

FRAMINGHAM, MA — On what would've been his 79th birthday, Framingham will recognize former resident Eurie Stamps Sr. The City Council's Eurie Stamps Ad-hoc Subcommittee, which includes Councilors Tracey Bryant, Robert Case and John Stefanini, on Feb. 17 voted to make March 2 Eurie Stamps Sr. Day. He was shot and killed by a Framingham officer 10 years ago during a raid at his Coburnville home. The Eurie Stamps Sr. Day comes amid a larger recent review of the circumstances of his death. Over the summer, the #JusticeForEurie Campaign held rallies in Framingham and Cambridge, where Stamps lived for most of his life. Late last summer, Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan agreed to review the previous district attorney's investigation, which found Stamps' death to be accidental. Stamps was 68 on Jan. 5, 2011, when the now-disbanded Framingham SWAT team raided his home in search of Stamps' stepson. Stamps, a retired MBTA employee and grandfather, was watching a Celtics game when police arrived. Police ordered him onto the ground, and Stamps was lying on his stomach when officer Paul Duncan apparently tripped and shot Stamps with his rifle. Following Ryan's review, the Framingham City Council on Sept. 3 issued a formal apology to Stamps' family — although Framingham officials have declined to consider firing Duncan. As of January, Ryan had sent documents from the investigation to the FBI's training academy at Quantico, Va. Eurie Stamps Sr. Day will likely coincide with the creation of a scholarship in his name at Framingham High School. As of Friday, Members of Stamps' family were working with school district officials to finalize the terms of scholarship.
