BEVERLY, MA — More sunshine and warmer temperatures mean more time outside this spring.
In Chelsea, that means a need for sneakers for veterans in need.
Jan Pierce is hoping Beverly residents will help her mitigate that need during a sneaker drive she is holding at the Cove Community Center on March 14.
A member of the Beverly Veterans Council, she said she was looking for a way to help veterans in the state this spring. Because of the coronavirus risk, the hard-hit Holyoke Soldiers' Home is unable to accept donations, so she instead reached out to the Chelsea Soldiers' Home Director of Recreation John Davis, who told her sneakers were that home's biggest need.
"Anything I can do to keep the veterans moving and brighten their step I want to help them," Pierce told Patch.
The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Only new sneakers will be accepted with Velcro preferred, but not laced can be donated as well.
It will be a contactless, pop-the-trunk event.
Pierce said her neighbor, Terry Mailloux, is helping her with the drive.
"As Beverly residents, we pride ourselves in helping others," she said. "Let's show the veterans we care."
Those who would rather donate directly to the Chelsea Soldiers' Home can do so by sending sneakers to John Davis, Director of Recreation, Chelsea Solders' Home, 91 Crest Avenue, Chelsea, MA, 02150.
