Cody Webb Even in Nashville, Cody Webb stands out. More than radio - friendly, his music takes you to another place, someplace very much like the small hometown you always wished you’d known, you’d find only a special few — and Cody is among them. When he sings his latest single “Jon Boat,” you’re out with him and his buddies on Lake Murray, near his boyhood South Carolina home, taking a cold plunge on a hot day. On “She’s Carolina,” which has millions of views on his Facebook page with its video streaming more than 100+ times, the spray of the surf, the aroma of family home cooking, and the sway of a swing on a sunny afternoon reach out and draw you in. These snapshots capture the essence of Cody’s history in Ridge Spring, SC. His mother was the music minister at th eir church. His father was a performer and songwriter. Their example inspired Cody to begin teaching himself guitar. He learned fast: at age 12 he made his public debut in a cameo with his dad’s band at the South Carolina Poultry Festival. As he remembers, “My little hands were shaking — but not from nervousness. It was from excitement at knowing suddenly that I was doing exactly what I loved to do.” Later, while studying mechanical engineering at Clemson University, Cody began playing local gigs. More imp ortantly, a friend of his turned him on an album that would change his creative direction. “My first influence in music was Southern rock. Then one day my roommate played me ‘Livin’ Part of Life’ by Eric Church. I fell in love with it right then. I played it again and again. Then I got a copy of Carolina and for a long time that was all I listened to. At that point, I knew I wanted to write songs like that. I wanted to make people feel like I felt when I heard those Eric Church songs.” So with typical self - discipline, Cody saved his gig earnings scrupulously. Right after graduation in 2014, he married his fiancé, Hayley. And on the last day of their honeymoon, they headed straight to Music City. His talent won him quick notice and a publishing deal, which h elped meet expenses along with gigs back home. People noticed him immediately, including Luke Combs. They started writing together; one of their co - writes with Ray Fulcher, “Memories Are Made Of,” made it onto Luke’s Platinum debut album. “Having a song o n Luke’s album really opened a lot of doors for me in this town,” Cody says. Since then, he’s written more than 150 songs and released a self - titled EP as well as four singles (“More Than A Little,” “She’s Carolina,” “Don’t Tell Me” and now “Jon Boat.”) The momentum he’s built as a fast -rising singer/songwriter carried Cody beyond the charts and onto national television, when the National Football League recruited him to play the role of an ambitious, gifted young artist in a video shown before the 2019 N FL draft. Narrated by Dolly Parton and also featuring Vanderbilt University cornerback Alim Muhammad, the 90 - second video was viewed by 20 million football fans - and fans -to -be of Cody Webb
