This mini-documentary on Tate Arms explores the role this home played in the fight for civil rights and housing equality. Learn about Iowa City's first rooming house built expressly for Black tenants, by a Black owner. Watch the program and learn about the people who helped provide housing for African American workers and students at the University of Iowa during a time of discrimination.
The History of Tate Arms This video is the second in a two-part series to highlight historic landmarks associated with African American History. You can watch the story of the Iowa Federation Home, which provided housing to female students at the University of Iowa. Both homes are now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
