USS San Diego Docks In Bahrain As Navy Treats COVID-19 Outbreak

By Chris Jennewein, Times of San Diego February 27, 2021 The Navy announced that the USS San Diego has docked in Bahrain amid an outbreak of COVID-19 on the locally-based amphibious ship. "San Diego is currently pierside in the Kingdom of Bahrain," the Navy said on Friday. "All positive cases have been isolated on board, and the ship remains in a restricted COVID bubble." "The ship has a robust medical capability, including embarked medical staff, operating rooms, a 24-bed hospital ward and additional overflow capacity," according to the statement. The San Diego left its namesake home port in October as part of the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, which officially deployed in November after training off Hawaii. The Navy said it was also investigating cases of the disease aboard the Mayport, FL-based guided-missile cruiser USS Philippine Sea. "Medical health professionals are conducting a thorough contact investigation to determine the source of COVID-19 aboard the ships and whether any other personnel may have been exposed," the Navy said.
