Alto-rilievo or ‘high relief’ is a sculptural technique where modeled figures are detached with evident relief from the background plane. Relief comes from the Italian relievare “to raise” and the Latin verb relevo. To create sculpture in relief is to give the impression that the sculpted materials have been raised above the background plane. Master artis John Robbolino Jr. infuses hand blown glass to bring a touch of color to fuse into his unique artworks. This method of high-relief from antiquity enables his compositions to literally stand out from the canvas, combining engineering and architecture similar to the antique works of Italian masters like Leonardo da Vinci, Leon Battista Alberti and Michelangelo, when the artist was both designer and architect. Relief sculptures date back over 20,000 years in Eastern and Western Cultures. They are popular throughout the world on the walls of buildings or as a sequence of several panels or sections of relief may represent an extended narrative. According to Robbolino, the one-of-a-kind Equestrian Equinox is a high relief created to show the ancient world of time and its transformation to the modern world. The red artwork depicts the Roman chariot wheel used to express physical power with exploding hand-blown glass and metal projecting into today’s world. The magnificent horses symbolize the Ferrari prancing horses and represent majestic power, opulence and elegance unmatched in today’s world.
