Press release from the City of Golden Valley:
February 26, 2021
Just Deeds recently launched its own website, which marks another step in ridding the Minneapolis area of racially restrictive covenants.
In Nov 2019 the Golden Valley Human Rights Commission launched the Just Deeds Project, which provided free assistance for homeowners to identify and remove discriminatory covenants from their property titles. As Feb 26, 2021, Just Deeds has helped discharge 101 restrictive covenants.
Since that time, support for Just Deeds has only grown, and in Oct 2020 the Golden Valley City Council passed a resolution to officially participate in the Just Deeds Coalition. The Coalition's goal is to acknowledge the harm caused by discriminatory covenants and actively work to dismantle structural and institutional racism through education and action. City staff have been working closely with a number of volunteer partners to expand the reach of Just Deeds and create a meeting place for organizations to collaborate on this important work.
