Description
Males averagely grow to 8–12 in (20–30 cm) straight carapace length, and females can averagely grow to 15 in (38 cm) or larger.
Due to their size I want you to be fully aware they will need a tank of at least 40 gallons to start and probably will need a 100 gallon or a stock pond in the end.
Please do research and ensure you will at least have the basics: canister pumps work best for turtles to avoid having to clean water frequently.
You will need at least a 10.0 UVA bulb and a splash proof 75 plus Watt heat bulb (turtles need UVB and UVA)
they require a basking dock because they are not fully aquatic, they do need to come up and bask under the light which helps with both regulating temperature and appetite as well as vitamin A.
Heater to keep the water at least 78°
They also need cuttlebone which can be purchased at PetSmart but you need to use a knife to remove the hard backing.
You cannot use small gravel as anything small enough to fit in their mouth will be eaten and and if swallowed can be life-threatening because they cannot pass them and they will bind up.
They need a good mixture of pellets and greens. I can supply you with a list of turtle safe vegetables as well.
Only rehoming to good home that can verify they will provide everything it needs. Also be aware turtles are not community pets they will eat other fish, and should not be housed with anything that has barbs such as bottom feeders or catfish. It will also attack other turtles and are territorial to establish dominance. They have been known to bite out chunks of other smaller turtle shells and or feet.
They will also eat live bearing fish as a supplemental treat every so often such as guppies and mollies.
