Land Navigation Course in Kisatchie National Forest DuPuis Guides Land Navigation Course 1 is an exciting and challenging training course where you will learn and hone the fundamentals of land navigation. This course will cover map and terrain features, map reading, features of a base plate compass, plotting a route, getting orientated, trekking with a base plate compass, dead reckoning, terrain association, leap frogging, travel speed and timing, trail safety and hand radio communication. The course will include a instruction session and a field exercise. This course, along with the Bushcraft Basics Training Course, is a prerequisite to the Survival Training Course. FAQ… What is Land Navigation? Land navigation is the discipline of following a route through unfamiliar terrain on foot or by vehicle, using maps with reference to terrain, a compass, and other navigational tools.(wikipedia) Who is this training for? This training is for men and women ages 9 and older who are interested in developing their bushcraft skills. All minors must be accompanied by a guardian. Where will this training be held? This training will be held in Kisatchie National Forest near Woodworth, Louisiana. It’s about a 1.5 hour drive from Lafayette to the meet up location without extra stops. What time do I need to be there? All participants must be ready to roll at the meet up location at 8:00am sharp. We will carpool into the National Forest to be in place and ready to begin at 8:30am. Any instruction that you miss due to being late might not be recovered. We will respect the other participants. How much does this training cost? $75 a person What is included in the cost? included in the cost is…. - a high quality, name brand baseplate compass - map with lanyard and waterproof bag (ziploc) - marker - instruction session - field exercise - neck gaiter What do I need to bring? You will need to provide the following… - light weight long-sleeve shirt - pants (for some thickets) - comfortable hiking shoes - hat - watch - meds - Plenty of drinking water and sports drinks (especially if its hot) - Simple lunch and munchies - Camp chair for Instruction Session (A full list will be provided when you register or upon request.) What else should I know? - Dress for the temperature - Be ok with trekking through water. Most of the time its ankle deep. sometimes the water is to your knees or thighs if we are in the WMA. - Bring and drink lots of water if it is hot - A good idea is to have a staff (not a trekking pole) to push through the brush. This isn’t a must but it’s helpful Itinerary Saturday (from Lafayette, La) 6:30am Depart Lafayette 1.5 hr Drive 8:00am Arrive at meet up location 8:30am Begin training 8:30am - 10:30am Instruction Session 10:30am - 11:00am Break and Kit-up 11:00am - 4:00pm Field Exercise 4:00pm Depart 1.5 hr drive + 0.5hr stop 6:00pm arrive in Lafayette 2.0hr Instruction Session Break and kit up 5.0hr Field Exercise
